Senses in sentences
When talking or writing, it is possible to make use of our five senses. It is also possible to exclude the senses from the what is said, leading to a more objective way of speaking.
Sensory language references and stimulates the senses, thus:

The grandfather had become very old. His legs would not carry him, his eyes could not see, his ears could not hear, and he was toothless. When he ate, bits of food sometimes dropped out of his mouth. He tried to move the bowl closer; it fell to the floor and broke. His daughter-in-law scolded him. The young peasant and his wife looked at each other, and tears filled their eyes. They were ashamed because they had treated the old grandfather so meanly, and from that day they again let the old man eat with them at the table and took better care of him.

How to change weak verbs to strong verbs
TO REWRITE SENTENCES USING STRONG VERBS:
- Underline any use of Be, Is, Are, Was, Been, Being, Were, Has, Have, Having, Had.John is the manager of the produce department.
- Look for a noun or adjective that you can convert to a strong verb.John is the manager of the produce department. ("manager," noun -- predicate nominative)
- Rewrite the sentence using that strong verb.John manages the produce department.
Always use good grammar in English when you write, but do not neglect using strong verbs for strong writing and a more robust writing style.

Descriptive Sentences
VIVID VS. VAGUE LANGUAGE
The sensory details you select in your writing should create for your reader the same picture you have in your mind. Instead of using vague, general words, your sensory language should be concrete and sensory-packed. This makes the difference between vivid and and vague language. Take a look at the comparison between vague and vivid sentences.

WHAT TO AVOID WHEN USING SENSORY DETAIL
- Too many adjectives—retain only the most powerful words in your writing, deleting any unnecessary words
- Too many adverbs—verbs are stronger than adverbs. She strolled into the room is more powerful than She walked casually into the room.
- Clichéd figures of speech—overused language, such as green with envy, signals a lack of imagination. Use fresh, descriptive words that go against rote thinking.
Now, consider this paragraph with all five sensory descriptors: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.
My sister and I walked along the boardwalk one afternoon on our vacation. The hot boards warmed our bare feet. We watched the foam-covered waves topple over each other and then slide back into sea. The crashing water competed with the exuberant yells from the seagulls. We bought a perfectly oval fluff of pink cotton candy that dissolved sweetly in our mouths. | There are so many lessons one can learn about life from a dog. Imagine this scenario: it is raining heavily outside and you need to leave for someone's house. Almost everyone in the world has future plans. A person without any plans is likened to a ship sailing the ocean aimlessly without any destinations. Having plans help us know our objectives in life and this can help us realise our dreams more effectively.
Like most people, I have future plans as well. When planning for the future, the first plan that I make is to choose a profession. It is quite hard to make a defnite choice, because I know it will affect me for the rest of my life. I want a profession that is challenging, that satisfies me and brings me joy. I believe that a job should be like a hobby. I want to love my work and know that I am making a difference in this world by educating the younger generation. My ambition is to be an English teacher. I decide on a teaching career because of my great love for this international language, the language which is the most widely used in the world. That is my first reason.
The second reason is that, my mother encourages me to be a teacher and share my knowledge with the students in order to help them fulfill their wishes in their lives.

Not many students go through their teenage years without dreaming, thinking or simply imagining what their dream house would be like. I started dreaming of my dream house at the tender age of seven, when I accompanied my father to the outskirts of London to visit a distant aunt. Her house was the picture of tranquility. That quaint little cottage set the standard for my dream house. I imagine a house with a large garden in front, where my gardener would plant the most beautiful flowers of every shade imaginable. I would, of course, be able to pluck the flowers. I like to arrange them in my house. My house would have six spacious bedrooms, a large dining hall that would accommodate twenty people comfortably and a modern and well-equipped kitchen where I prepare nutritious meals for me and my family.
Almost everyone would love to have a car that suits their needs and is ideal for them. My dream car should be spacious and stylish. It is fast, but need not be the fastest car in the world, since speed kills. What I have in mind is a white Honda Accord, since white is my favourite colour. It has a good reputation of being a powerful and fuel-efficient car. I am able to save on fuel if I own a Honda car.
Furthermore, in my opinion, it is classy and has an attractive appearance.

At the age of seventeen, I am just a few years away from adulthood. It is only normal for someone to picture their future life partner at this age. Personally, I would prefer a good and decent man. He should be a bit handsome too. Apart from anything physical, he must be a committed Hindu like me, as I believe that it is best if a couple share the same religion and be blessed by their god. He must also be loyal and trustworthy. He would not lie and definitely should not flirt with anyone. He must be hardworking and determined, only then will he be rich enough to pay for the family expenses and support me financially during shopping or festive seasons. These are the traits I want in my future husband but the most important trait my husband should process is to treat me like a princess and love me just the way I am.
Finally, I must achieve all these future plans in my life. They may not be easy to accomplish but I am willing to strive hard and make the necessary sacrifices in order to be successful and have a higher standard of living. When I have actualised my major plans, I believe that I have lived my life to the fullest.

Describe what makes you happy and explain why.
It is human nature to long for a happy life. Carrying out activities that we enjoy bring us happiness and joy. There are a lot of things that make me happy and the top three are hanging out with my family and friends, reading and spending time with my pet cat Ginger.
I come from a medium-sized family that comprises five members. My elder brother and sister are married and currently residing in Singapore and Australia respectively. My parents are real joys to me as they are both loving and caring. When my older siblings come back home during the holidays, all of us would go on a sightseeing tour of the tourist attractions in Malaysia. Since we have strong family ties, we not only share our happy moments but assist one another to solve problems too.
I enjoy hanging out with my intimate friends or ‘BFFs’ - Zoe, Kate and Mia. On a typical Saturday or holiday, we visit the library to borrow books. We then head for the swimming pool, where we have a lot of fun playing and laughing. After that, we go to a shopping center to have lunch, shop, and possibly watch the latest film. We usually hang out until evening as that makes us happy and relaxed.
Reading is one of the hobbies that I enjoy the most. Through reading the newspaper, I not only know what is happening all over my home country but also abroad. Apart from that, I am also able to improve my language standards and perform better in examinations. Besides the papers, I also enjoy reading storybooks with captivating plots. Mystery and detective novels with interesting and unpredictable plots totally engross me. To me, reading is both entertaining and rewarding.
Due to the fact the I have a soft spot for animals, especially cats, spending time with my pet cat Ginger gives me a lot of pleasure. I found him under my father’s car one morning about two years ago. Mewing pitifully, he appeared skinny and hungry. I took pity on him and fed him some food. After his meal, I bathed him. I was glad that my mother allowed me to keep Ginger, which turned out to be an affectionate cat. Besides that, he is also a close companion and an excellent hunter.
I am glad to be blessed with my family, friends and cat. I consider myself fortunate and I enjoy every quality moment that I spend with them. I will most probably continue to pursue the hobby of reading as it is extremely beneficial. Since my life would be boring without them, I will always cherish them.
